Title: Civil Rights Director 

Position Type:Full-Time, Exempt

Location:Dallas, TX

Position Overview: CAIR-DFW is seeking a qualified professional to help direct the strategy and case management for our chapter. Join a growing team, serving the estimated 175,000+ American Muslims in North Texas and the Panhandle region.

Time Commitment:Full-time with periodic evenings and weekends required for presentations and community outreach events.

 

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

â      Help develop Civil Rights Department and Case Management strategy and processes.

â      Conduct intakes and investigate legal claims through effective communication with an incredibly diverse community.

â      Manage a considerable caseload (CAIR attorneys often manage 150-200 intakes per year)

â      Perform in-depth legal research

â      Legal writing including, but not limited to, drafting complaints, letters, and memos; and non-legal writing including drafting community advisories, issue briefings, and reports

â      Communicate with outside parties such as attorneys, employers, law enforcement agents, administrative agencies, etc.

â      Work with Outreach Coordinator to schedule and conduct public speaking events/educational workshops to educate and empower diverse community members on their rights through community presentations and material distributions

â      Travel for outreach including participating in community events and coalition meetings

â      Develop legal and Civil Rights contact list

â      Coordination with CAIR National Civil Rights team and other civil rights organizations as necessary

â      Create Civil Rights Training Manual to document processes on how to handle each aspect of your role.

â      Conduct Jummah Khutba’s at DFW masajid creating awareness and community engagement (if qualified)

â      Other duties as assigned

All CAIR staff members are required to assist in general duties such as answering phones, weekly outreach, fundraising, and other office tasks.

 

Required Qualifications:

â      Law degree from an American Bar Association accredited school

â      Texas State Bar admission

â      Strong time management skills with a demonstrated ability for meeting deadlines

â      2 to 6 years of experience after completing law school

â      Track record of community service and engagement (preferred)

â      Demonstrated problem-solving skills with outstanding attention to detail

â      Comfort working productively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment

â      Excellent oral and written communication skills including public speaking experience

â      Experience working with people from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds

â      Access to a working vehicle and the ability to drive throughout the greater DFW Area

â      High degree of self-motivation and creativity

â      A strong commitment to civil rights and CAIR’s mission

â      Basic computer proficiency including knowledge of MS Office, MS Outlook, and WestLaw Next

â      Knowledge of cloud applications such as SharePoint, Office365, and social media applications (preferred)

â      Conversational proficiency in Arabic, Farsi or Urdu (preferred)

â      Experience in civil rights/civil liberties, employment, national security, open government, police practices, corrections, immigrants’ rights, and/or other areas of public interest law (preferred)

 

This position reports to the Executive Director.

â      Compensation commensurate with skills and experience
