REPORTS TO: Principal

SUMMARY: Provide appropriate learning activities and experience designed to help second language students achieve the level of English proficiency established by the curriculum. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.

Responsible for instructing others about the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. Assigns books and essays for students to read and teaches them how to identify themes, points of view, and other characteristics.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill requirements of the IQA’s curriculum program for middle grades 6-8 and high school grades 9-10.
  • Plans and strategies must reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles, and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, Board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Teach within the course of study for the subject area at the grade level as prescribed in the curriculum adopted by the school.
  • Instruct students on interpreting literature.
  • Assign books to read, including classics and contemporary novels.
  • Help students interpret literature and poetry.
  • Provide background on authors' life and works.
  • Teach students about the structure and content of the English language, including proper grammar, spelling, and sentence structure.
  • Teach about different literary styles.
  • Create instructional resources for use in the classroom.
  • Provide a variety of planned learning experiences using a variety of media and methods in order to motivate students and best utilize available time for instruction.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities
  • Create positive educational climate for students to learn in.
  • Meet course and school-wide student performance goals.
  • Structure a physical classroom conductive to learning.
  • Establish and maintain efficient classroom management procedures and standards of pupil behavior.
  • Understand and plan lessons leading to subject area objectives and assume the responsibility for written lesson plans for substitutes
  • Participate in ongoing training sessions.
  • Maintain grade books.
  • Grade papers and perform other administrative duties as needed.
  • Create projects designed to enhance lectures.
  • Read and stay abreast of current topics in education.
  • Utilize various curriculum resources.
  • Integrate competencies, goals, and objectives into lesson plans.
  • Utilize curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and linguisticbackgrounds of the students served.
  • Develop incentives to keep participants in class.
  • Utilize public library resources.
  • Work with program coordinators to ensure initiatives are being met.
  • Tutor students on an individual basis.
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Prepare and distribute required reports.
  • Observe and evaluate student's performance.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by invoking approved disciplinary procedures of IQA
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Stay informed of and comply with IQA regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervises none.

    EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university; valid Texas teacher certificate with required endorsements for subject and subject level assigned is a plus.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated flexibility to cope with the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
  • Demonstrated general knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various routine tasks, duties, and procedures and the ability to follow specific instructions with little or no previous experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise considerable and sound judgment to instruct students and manage their behavior, under the general direction of the principal.
  • Demonstrated willingness to remain current with the latest developments in the profession.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills required to achieve the goals of the position.
